I’m Adam, Pueblo Computer Help, 2727 N Elizabeth St. The Amazon scam usually starts with a call, text, or email about an order you didn’t place, an iPhone or a TV charged to your account, or a “suspicious charge” you need to confirm. You call back or press 1, and a friendly person offers to cancel it or refund you. Then they need to get on your computer.

The most common version we hear about is the refund scam. They connect to your computer, open what looks like your bank account, and “accidentally” refund you too much, say $5,000 instead of $500. They act panicked and ask you to send the difference back with gift cards, cash, or a wire. The refund was never real. They moved your own money between your accounts, or just edited the web page while you watched.

Warning signs of an Amazon scam

What to do right now

  1. Hang up and stop answering their calls and texts.
  2. Check your orders yourself in the Amazon app or by typing amazon.com into the browser. If there’s no strange order there, the message was fake.
  3. If they were on your computer, disconnect it from the internet.
  4. Call your bank and card issuer using the number on the back of your card, especially if you sent money or they saw your banking.
  5. Change your Amazon, email, and bank passwords from a different device they never touched, and turn on two-step verification.
  6. Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov. If you paid with gift cards, contact the card company right away too.

What we do

Bring in the computer they used, plus any other computers, phones, and tablets you use for email, Amazon, or banking. We save your files, then remove the remote-access programs and anything else they installed, check for added admin accounts, startup items, and browser extensions, and make sure nothing is still connecting out. Then we help you re-secure your Amazon and email accounts and walk you through re-securing your online banking, including setting up alerts so you hear about any new charge. More on that: removing scammer remote access and re-securing a hacked email.

What it costs

$179.99 to $299, depending on how severe it is. A cleanup of a single device starts at $179.99. It goes up toward $299 when there are several devices, a deeper compromise, or email and bank logins to re-secure along with the cleanup. We look first and quote before we start, so you know the price before any work is done. All of our work is warrantied and guaranteed.

The shop is at 2727 N Elizabeth St, Pueblo, CO 81003. Bringing your devices in is the usual way to do this. On-site repairs are typically $299, so it’s usually cheaper to bring them in. Remote support is $99 per hour, but after a scam we usually want the computer on our bench so we can check it properly.

How common is this?

Amazon was the most-complained-about company in the FTC’s Consumer Sentinel data for August 2025, with 7,128 business imposter complaints in that one month (FTC, Top 50 Companies, August 2025). In FTC data from 2023 reports, Amazon was the second most impersonated company (FTC, “Who’s who in scams,” May 2024).

We can’t recover money or gift cards you sent. Your bank, card issuer, or the gift card company handles that. We get the scammers out of your devices and accounts. All of our work is warrantied and guaranteed.

Questions people ask

Does Amazon ever ask for gift cards or remote access?

No. Real companies don’t ask you to pay with gift cards, and Amazon doesn’t need to connect to your computer to give you a refund. Check orders yourself in the Amazon app or at amazon.com.

They said they refunded me too much. Do I owe them?

No. That’s the scam. The “refund” wasn’t real. They either moved your own money between accounts or edited what you saw on the screen. Don’t send anything. Call your bank.

Which devices should I bring?

The computer they connected to, plus any other computer, phone, or tablet you use for email, Amazon, or banking.

How much does it cost?

$179.99 to $299, depending on how severe it is. A single computer starts at $179.99. We quote before we start.

Can you get my gift card money back?

No. Contact the gift card company and your bank right away. We can sit with you while you call.
