I’m Adam, Pueblo Computer Help on Elizabeth Street. A big red screen says your computer is infected and to call “Microsoft Support” right now. Or someone calls the house saying they’re from Microsoft or Windows and your computer is sending out errors. Either way, it’s a scam. Microsoft doesn’t call people about viruses, and a real Windows warning never gives you a phone number to call.

If you already called the number or let them on your computer, that’s okay. It happens to careful people every day. Here’s what to do and how we clean it up.

Warning signs of a fake Microsoft support scam

What to do right now

  1. Hang up, and don’t call the number on the screen again.
  2. If it’s just a pop-up and you never called, close the browser. If it won’t close, hold the power button until the computer turns off. The pop-up is usually just a web page, not a real infection.
  3. If you let them on the computer, turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable and leave it off until we check it.
  4. If you paid or gave them card or bank information, call your bank or card issuer at the number on the back of your card.
  5. Change your email and banking passwords from a different device they never touched.
  6. Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov.

What we do

Bring the computer, and any other computers, phones, or tablets in the house, to 2727 N Elizabeth St. We save your files first. Then we remove whatever they installed: remote-access tools like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, ConnectWise ScreenConnect, or UltraViewer, fake “security” programs, and other malware. We check for admin accounts they added, startup programs, scheduled tasks, and browser extensions. If they had a password manager or saved browser passwords in front of them, we treat those as exposed. Then we help you re-secure your email and walk you through re-securing your bank logins. See how we remove scammer remote access for more detail.

For an ordinary pop-up with no phone call, a regular virus removal is often all you need.

What it costs

$179.99 to $299, depending on how severe it is. A cleanup of a single device starts at $179.99. It goes up toward $299 when there are several devices, a deeper compromise, or email and bank logins to re-secure along with the cleanup. We look first and quote before we start, so you know the price before any work is done. All of our work is warrantied and guaranteed.

The shop is at 2727 N Elizabeth St, Pueblo, CO 81003. Bringing your devices in is the usual way to do this. On-site repairs are typically $299, so it’s usually cheaper to bring them in. Remote support is $99 per hour, but after a scam we usually want the computer on our bench so we can check it properly.

How common is this?

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center received 47,794 tech and customer support scam complaints in 2025, with reported losses of about $2.1 billion (FBI IC3, 2025 Internet Crime Report). In FTC data from 2023 reports, losses were highest when scammers impersonated Microsoft, and the FTC notes those scams start with a fake security pop-up and a number to call (FTC, “Who’s who in scams,” May 2024).

The money side is between you and your bank. We can’t recover what was paid or promise a refund, but we make sure the scammers are off your machine and out of your accounts. All of our work is warrantied and guaranteed.

Questions people ask

Does Microsoft ever call people about viruses?

No. Microsoft doesn’t make unsolicited calls about your computer, and a real Windows error message never tells you to call a phone number. If someone calls saying they’re Microsoft, hang up.

I just saw the pop-up and didn’t call. Am I okay?

Usually. Most of these pop-ups are web pages, not infections. Close the browser, or hold the power button to shut down. If it keeps coming back, bring it in and we’ll check it.

They were on my computer for an hour. What now?

Disconnect it from the internet, call your bank if you paid or shared account details, change passwords from a different device, and bring the computer in. We remove what they installed and check every device.

How much does the cleanup cost?

$179.99 to $299, depending on how severe it is. We quote before we start.

Can you get my money back from the scammers?

No. Refunds and fraud claims go through your bank or card issuer. We can sit with you while you call them.
